Alumni Medical Library
About:
The Alumni Medical Library Archives primarily collects materials relevant to the history of the BU Medical Campus (comprising the New England Female Medical College, BU Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Public Health, and a series of hospitals affiliated with the School of Medicine), including publications produced by the schools/hospitals, materials by or about faculty and graduates of the schools, and other related items. The archives secondarily collects materials relevant to the history of medicine in general, including historical medical textbooks and artifacts.
An extensive collection of historical medical campus publications has been digitized and these titles are available in OpenBU.
Materials not digitized include personal papers of prominent faculty members, physical artifacts, historical textbooks and other print materials not published by Boston University, photographs, internal records from academic departments and hospital committees, and other items. The collection is focused on physical materials, meaning that its effective range is from the late 1700s, with textbooks from the medical school’s original library, to the early 2000s, by which time medical campus publications and records were mainly produced online.
The archival collection is stored in an offsite location and is not open to the public. Research in the collections is conducted by library staff in response to questions. If needed, appointments may be made to consult archival materials in person: in this case, they will be brought to the library for review under library staff supervision.
